 The
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was founded in 1805
though its origins date back to 1791. It is the oldest school
of fine art in the United States and considered to be one of
the finest in the world.
The emphasis of The Academy has always been, and continues
to be, upon developing and imparting to its students an appreciation and mastery of the classic disciplines of art.
The idea being, that if you do not have a thorough
understanding and command of the fundamentals that others have
paid the price to discover for you, how can you
possibly expect to improve upon or go beyond the limitations
of the past?
The students who attend The Academy tend to be individuals
who understand that there is no need to "re-invent the
wheel", nor any need to cavalierly discount the lessons
or applications others have found for that wheel. Being
different just for the sake of being different is no
more a bright idea in the field of art than in that of any
other fields.
This does not mean that Academy students are stuck in the
traditions of the past nor limited by dogmatic affection for
this or that "master" – far from it. The list of
cutting edge, famous artists who have trained at The Academy
reads like a veritable Who’s Who of American and
international art.
What it does mean is that if someone went to The Academy
chances are very good that they know their stuff; are serious
about their work, and care about making it, whatever
"It" is, as excellent as possible artistically.
